Paranormal Investigator, Ian McDermott, has come to the small coastal river city of Astoria, Oregon … to investigate a rash of recent slayings, that in their wake, have left the banks of the Columbia River littered with horrifically mutilated, completely exsanguinated … rotting corpses.

All leads point to the new waterfront nightclub aptly named The Morgue—devilishly devised by its unabashedly flamboyant owner, Vladimir Drago Salizzar (a self-proclaimed vampiric creature of the night), to attract Gothic types and presumed vampire role-playing raving revelers.

Ian, along with his four-legged friend, Scout, and his financial benefactor’s niece, Zoey, finds himself in way beyond his depth, caught up in an unimaginable web of extreme danger, malevolent evil, and demonic deceit, in this terrifying tale that will leave you breathless at every twist and turn; as you dive deep into the cold hellish abyss that is … Red Tide – The Flavel House Horror / Vampires of the Morgue.

Red Tide The Flavel House Horror/Vampires of the Morgue The Ian McDermott PhD Paranormal Investigator Series Book 2 edition by David Reuben Aslin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

It's confusing to me when I read that Book 1 of this supposed series is "coming soon." Oh well. That doesn't have any bearing on this story.

Ian McDermott, Ph.d, is done with werewolves for the time being and has moved onto that other fine group of demonic beings - Vampires. Accompanied by his faithful German Shepherd, Scout, who was inherited from the deceased sheriff in book 1, Ian finds himself in a small northwest town Astoria, which has had a problem with people dying with nary a drop of blood left in their bodies. After checking in with the local police and getting their approval for his investigation, Ian meets a rather colorful local author - Clayton Collins, and his niece, Zoey. There's a club in town that seems designed for the vampire set. Filled with goth type vampire wannabes the place is calling out to be noticed. With a dye job to fit in better and some new clothes and other attention from Zoey, Ian is ready to investigate...

So was it a good story? Pretty much. It kept my attention although I had to object to Scout's treatment. Too many cheeseburgers and not enough walks to relieve himself. How that dog didn't poop all over Ian's car, trailer, hotel room, whatever, I'll never know. That's why this is a work of fiction. Forget the vampires. A German Shepherd fed that diet and not given enough time outdoors is a recipe for disaster. I speak from experience...

Loup-Garou The Beast of Harmony Falls (The Ian McDermott, Ph.D., Paranormal Investigator Series Book 1)

Red Tide The Flavel House Horror / Vampires of the Morgue (The Ian McDermott, Ph.D., Paranormal Investigator Series Book 2)

The Ian McDermott Series, Books 1 and 2, were not bad but they were not great either. The concept, a cryptozoologist investigating unsolvable crimes, has potential. In the first book, Ian is looking into the case of missing hikers near Harmony Falls. He makes friends with the local sheriff and his deputy. Ian is a poor soul. He lost his wife and daughter in a car accident several years before and now lives in a camper and various liquor bottles. Working with the Harmony Falls police rekindles his love of investigations and he finds a purpose in life again.

In the second book, Ian goes directly from Harmony Falls to Astoria, Oregon to help another police department with a series of grisly slayings. He meets a local writer of horror stories who has quite a few secrets. Again Ian the driving force in the investigations and attempting to solve the crimes.

As I said, the concept, especially the future laid out at the end of book 2 has a lot of potential. There is a serious problem with the books in the way the dialogue is written. It is awkward and clunky. There is not a natural flow to it. All the characters always identify who they are speaking to by name, every time they speak to them. It gets tedious. I would suggest Mr. Aslin look at the conversations in the Adrian’s Undead series. They flow naturally and do not seem forced. I know conversation is a very hard thing to write but it really does need to be worked on in these two books.

I purchased both books because the descriptions intrigued me. I read the mixed bag of reviews on but still decided to try them. I would give the first two books of the series a solid three stars but am not sure whether I will continue with it when the next book is published.
good follow up story to Loup-Garou. Actually enjoyed it more than Loup-Garou. Great book Hope there's further books in this series beyond book 3
David Reuben has written quite a powerful novel. He has written quite a horror/mystery novel that truly pays homage to the history of Astoria and the Columbia River Valley. Set in Astoria and their famous historic Flavel House Museum, it is quite a novel that brings out the suspense and the character of the historic site. This novel is definitely worth reading no matter what season it is.
You know a story line is great when you find yourself a fan of the main character’s pet as well. Red Tide The Flavel House Horror is the second installment to the Ian McDermott, Ph.D., Paranormal Investigator Series by David Reuben. David does a great job combining the paranormal and mystery genres to spin a tale that takes place in our own backyards. Each character has an important role in moving the plot along. There were no empty fillers in this book. Even Scout, Ian’s dog, has an important role to play. Did I mention I love this dog? My only complaint is that book 3 is not ready to be purchase. I hope David does not make his fans wait too long. His next installment promises to be just as good and I am eager to get my hands on it.
Thoroughly enjoyed the further adventures of Ian and his super dog Scout in this Murder mystery, vampire story set again in the beautiful northwest states of Oregon and Washington. Ian, Scout and his new gothic friend Zoe are searching for an old Vampire that is creating a trail of dead and bloodless bodies all thru Astoria, Oregon and vicinity. I love how David describes the sights, towns, beaches, restaurants and other places Ian visits. It is so easy to picture where Ian goes even the spooky nightclub and dock area. Great story and looking forward to the next Ian McDermott book.
I love vampire stories and this book didn't fail me. It more than exceeded my expectations by weaving a unique and unexpected tale. Not to give away too much, the backdrop is not a mansion or a high school. It takes place in a small coastal town in Oregon at the town's latest hotspot. The setting, and a few other surprises, keeps you guessing through out the book.

I must admit, I'm a fan of the main character, Ian McDermott paranormal investigator and his dog Scout. I loved them both in the first book, Loup Garou. They ground the books by being such likable characters. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.

I'd also like to suggest you get the audiobook. Loved both of the audiobooks (book 1 and 2)
